So as long as I'm here--do you think Sauron's physical eyes lacked lids?
That in person they would look like the eye Frodo saw in the Mirror of
Galadriel? I was surprised recently to learn that many people disagree
with me on this.

Anything is possible, I suppose.

And now let me begin the long slide into semantic goo by suggesting
that nictating membranes could be regarded as a sort of eyelid not
readily noticeable (except when blinking).

Some lizards have lidless eyes, and the name "Sauron" is redolent of
lizardishness.

Though Tolkien denied in a letter than he had that Greek word in mind.
